Baseline survey

Desktop research alone is often not enough to get a clear and up-to-date picture of the local situation. It’s important to collect first-hand data that meets the specific needs of your organisation or project.

  How the Flipflopi did it...

At the start of the “Mitigating Plastic Pollution through Heritage Boat Building” project, the Flipflopi Project and the University of Portsmouth carried out a baseline study to understand how communities in the Lamu archipelago view plastic waste.

The survey aimed to:

  • Understand what people know, believe, and think about plastic waste
  • Learn about existing waste management practices in communities
  • Identify key stakeholders involved in waste management
  • Support future initiatives, including awareness campaigns and community-led waste management

A total of 723 people were interviewed across the archipelago, both individually and in focus groups. The survey covered their education, social background, consumption habits, waste disposal methods, and environmental awareness.

This research helped the project understand how people use and dispose of plastic, and who is already involved in plastic collection or recycling. This made it easier to target interventions effectively.

A baseline survey is also useful for collecting data on key indicators that will later help measure project outcomes.
