Research: Key principles

When starting something new, research is essential. While many resources explain how to conduct research, here are a few key principles to keep in mind:

  1. Use the scientific method – Take a structured approach by defining a goal, identifying what you already know, and recognising knowledge gaps.
  2. Document everything – Keep detailed records of your findings to track progress, ensure reproducibility, and refine your methods over time.
  3. Plan and execute – Once you’ve identified missing information, develop a clear method to obtain it and carry out your plan systematically.

At Flipflopi, we embrace practical research. Often the best way to explore new ideas is through hands-on experimentation.

  How the Flipflopi did it...

For instance, we tried using ‘COVID masks’ in a sheet press. This is practical as there is no need to shred them, or remove the bands or metal clips – just heat them up and see what happens. And it worked, a wonderful sheet material emerged.

We also tried something similar with diapers – but this time, things didn’t go as imagined, and the process and product were unacceptable. Instead of abandoning the process, we analysed what went wrong and refined our approach by separating the different materials first. By applying both our hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, we improved our method.

This iterative, agile approach to research is fast, flexible, and fun. It allows for real-time learning, which is crucial when working with new materials or systems.
