Building trust with your community

Building trust takes time, consistency, and genuine collaboration. Start by working closely with community champions and leaders – they often hold influence and can help connect your project to local needs.

Be present. Show up regularly, not just at the beginning or during big events. Follow up on activities so people see you’re committed for the long run.

Listen and respond. Gather feedback and use it to shape your programme. When people see their input reflected, trust naturally grows.

Recognise and reward progress – this might mean celebrating individuals, groups, or small wins. At the same time, build local skills and create opportunities for people to take part and take ownership.

Keep your message simple, clear and consistent. Repetition builds understanding and reinforces trust.

Partner with local organisations that share your values and already have trusted relationships. And make space for peer-to-peer learning, so the community can inspire and support each other.
